Fred Erickson's Memorabilia

We are so grateful to classmates and their parents who held on to all the "junk" accumulated from their childhoods. Fred Erickson graciously loaned us his things to copy. Here is his Student Council Award

Carl Sandburg at the "new" Carl Sandburg Junior High School.

The great teachers we had at Sandburg are standing in front of the school in the picture at the bottom of the page. Sharie Thomas Westling's Dad, Bob Thomas, is the young man in the front of the picture in the grey sport coat.

Intramural Sports Award

Fred Erickson's sports record---90 lbs and nearly 5 feet tall! Sounds like a typical 7th grader...

Carl Sandburg Junior High Farewell May 2009

Sandburg Cafeteria

We enjoyed a 1960's style lunch (chow mein) at 2009's prices--still tasted the same, and a great walk down memory lane. Pictured are Karin, gary, Sharie, John, and Lynell (Sharie's sister, class of 1965).

The Library--Jim Berg looks very comfortable here, he must have spent a LOT of time in the Sandburg library.

Gary and Jim in the small gym.

Dick Stensrud, Willis Boynton and Jim Berg. Mr. Theide and Ellis were also there.

Girl's lavatory--remember your first tube of lipstick, and "ratting" your hair in front of this mirror?

Dan and Jim at the lunch ticket window

Room 110, Miss Hansen's German Class..."Ich mochte sauerkraut NICHT gern! Du, siehst du die Blonde?" Remember all those "conversations" we memorized?

The boy's locker room--I bet at least half of us have never seen this room until we posted this!

Who Were the Sandburg 7-1's and 7-2's?

In the many District #281 grade schools whose 6th graders went on to 7th grade at Carl Sandburg Junior High, students were given a "test" that identified them to be part of  the 7-1 and 7-2 classrooms. Parents were given the option of having their children participate or not, some kids didn't take the test, some blew the test, and many other factors went into determining who did and did not end up in these classes. These classes were 1962 version of accelerated/enriched/honors classes today. The members of these classes were together for all classes throughout their three years at Sandburg, and when they went on to Cooper or Robbinsdale High Schools, they were given the option of entering 11th grade and finishing high school 1 year early, or staying for the three years of high school and adding more classes or electives when the mandatory courses were finished.

Many close friendships started in these two classes, and have endured over the years since. Mark Majewski organized a very successful 7-1 and 7-2 reunion/50th birthday party in 1999--Kathy Hum (CHS '67) hosted the party at her home near the St. Paul campus of the U of M.  Several teachers, including Mr. Thomas and Mr Deno (science) attended, also.
